Discover some of Hanoi’s delights on a free half-day walking tour. There are 2 options to choose from. You can visit the Old Quarter and French Quarter, taking in the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, or explore the West Lake area and see the Museum of Ethnology.
Option 1: Old Quarter and French Quarter
Hanoi’s Old Quarter, near popular Hoan Kiem Lake, has preserved its original street layout and buildings of times past. Today this fascinating area is known for its small artisans and merchants, which you’ll see on this tour option.
The first French concession was granted in 1874, south-east of the area where the Opera House stands today. In the next decade, the French began to create a new city, starting with the area between the old concession and the train station, located to the west. In the process, many ancient Vietnamese monuments were destroyed and replaced with Parisian-style buildings and boulevards. Gradually elegant villas lined tree-lined avenues, spreading to the south.
Option 2: Museum of Ethnology
The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is both a research center and a public museum. Learn about the many ethnic groups that are represented in Vietnam at this highly regarded museum.
The mission of the museum is scientific research, collection, documentation, conservation, exhibition, and preservation of the culture and history of the nation’s diverse ethnic groups.
Depending on your itinerary choice, you’ll also either visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Museum, a top Hanoi destination, or explore the West Lake area and have a chance to try the street food.
